Writing serves as a vital instrument for inquiry, allowing us to test the boundaries of experience, environment, and political thought. This PhD programme offers a space for writers to treat their creative practice as a rigorous form of research, situating their work within a vibrant community that bridges the gap between literary critique and artistic production. Whether you are interrogating the future of innovative fiction, exploring the intersection of literature and the body, or investigating the political potential of contemporary publishing, you will find a home here for sustained, deep-dive creative development.

The programme is designed for those who wish to advance their craft under the mentorship of research-active staff whose expertise spans film studies, linguistics, and diverse literary traditions. With a strong emphasis on both the individual creative voice and professional integration, you will benefit from:

• A dual-supervisor model that ensures regular, critical engagement with your evolving manuscript.
• Integration into the TECHNE doctoral training partnership, offering access to high-level professional development and research networks.
• A flexible approach to research, with options for both traditional monograph and publication-format theses.
• Active participation in a scholarly ecosystem that includes the New Writers Festival and Surrey Poetry Festival.
