The deadline to apply for the Jul 2027 intake is Apr 15, 2027, while tuition fees are 16,000 GBP per year.

This PhD studentship offers a unique, dual-role opportunity to embed yourself within the elite athletic development team at Millfield School while conducting high-level research through the Carnegie School of Sport. Unlike traditional research degrees, this programme requires the candidate to deliver athletic development coaching for up to three days per week during term time, working directly with pupils aged 13–18 in one of the UK’s most prominent independent boarding schools.

The research component focuses on the intersection of physical competence and psychological confidence in youth athletes. Investigating the long-term development of athleticism, the project aims to design experimental interventions that enhance both physical performance and self-belief within a school sport context. Successful candidates will benefit from:

• A full tuition fee waiver for three years.
• A living stipend of £15,609 per annum.
• Provided board and lodgings during school term time.
• Direct mentorship from experts in youth athletic development and strength and conditioning.
