Despite a ten-fold increase in the incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures over the last 30 years, significant questions remain regarding the optimal mechanisms for recovery. While controlled ankle motion (CAM) boots are a standard clinical intervention for maintaining a plantar-flexed position during healing, empirical evidence regarding how different boot designs—such as fixed versus dynamic loading models—influence the biological and mechanical recovery process remains fragmented. This PhD studentship aims to bridge the gap between clinical practice, biomechanical research, and industry-led innovation.

Based within the Carnegie School of Sport, the successful candidate will conduct high-impact research to determine the effectiveness of CAM boots, specifically investigating VACOped technology. The project is designed for researchers keen to operate at the intersection of sports medicine and biomechanics, offering the rare opportunity to collaborate directly with local NHS trusts. You will employ advanced diagnostic tools, including 3D motion capture and dynamic ultrasound, to evaluate patient outcomes and inform future rehabilitation protocols for this common and debilitating injury.
