Optimizing athletic performance through rigorous, data-driven methodology remains one of the most significant challenges in modern sports science. This Masters by Research (MRES) programme, developed in partnership with Output Sports and the Carnegie School of Sport, offers a unique opportunity to investigate the application of velocity-loss threshold (VLT) training within a high-performance, applied environment. By embedding the student within the Leeds Beckett men's Super BUCS Rugby Union team, this research facilitates a direct bridge between theoretical strength and conditioning (S&C) frameworks and real-world athletic outcomes.

Applied Research Integration

The programme is designed for aspiring sports scientists who thrive in dynamic, practical settings. Candidates will work closely with the university’s S&C team to assess whether velocity-based training protocols can effectively mitigate residual fatigue while simultaneously enhancing power and speed metrics. As part of this research, you will:

• Conduct in-situ data collection during the 2023-24 rugby season.
• Support daily S&C delivery for a elite-level university squad.
• Collaborate with the Carnegie Applied Rugby Research (CARR) centre, a hub renowned for its contributions to athlete welfare and performance optimization.
• Leverage industry-standard technology provided by Output Sports to influence the future of resistance training prescription.
