The Dental Hygiene Techniques programme at Cégep de Matane prepares students to become dental hygienists. It is a three-year college programme designed to meet the growing need for dental health professionals in the Est-du-Québec region. The programme allows students from the Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie, and Côte-Nord to study locally, avoiding the need to relocate to cities like Quebec City.

Students learn how to perform dental hygiene treatments and provide preventive care for teeth and mouth health. They gain hands-on experience in clinics, hospitals, dental offices, and public health settings. The programme is delivered through a partnership with Cégep régional de Lanaudière, which provides academic expertise and support.

The programme is offered starting in the fall of 2023. A small cohort of about ten students will be admitted each year. Students may qualify for the Parcours for Student Mobility in Quebec bursary, which provides $7,500 per year for those studying away from home. Graduates are prepared to work independently, as the profession now allows hygienists to practice without direct supervision from a dentist.
