Dentistry is the discipline concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the teeth, gums, and oral cavity, combining scientific knowledge with hands-on clinical skill. The curriculum typically begins with foundational sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and oral biology, giving students a detailed understanding of the structures and processes involved in oral health. As students progress, coursework moves into subjects such as dental materials science, radiology, and pathology, before transitioning into clinical training in areas including restorative dentistry, oral surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and prosthodontics. Clinical training forms a substantial part of the program, with students treating patients under close supervision, developing the manual precision and clinical judgment required for dental practice. Students learn to diagnose oral health conditions using both clinical examination and diagnostic imaging, and to plan and carry out treatment ranging from routine preventive care to more complex restorative and surgical procedures. Communication and patient management skills are also emphasized, since dental practice involves close, ongoing interaction with patients, often including those with anxiety about treatment. Many programs additionally cover public health aspects of dentistry, including preventive care and oral health education, reflecting the profession's role in broader community health. Given the technical precision required, dental education places significant weight on practical skill development alongside theoretical study. Over the program's 5 years, students build the clinical competence needed to practice independently. Graduates typically go on to practice as general dentists or pursue further specialization in fields such as orthodontics, oral surgery, or periodontics.
