Physics examines the basic laws that govern matter and energy, from classical mechanics and electromagnetism to thermodynamics and quantum theory, forming the foundation for much of modern science and engineering. The Department of Physics at National Sun Yat-sen University, located in Southern Taiwan, offers a bachelor's program in this discipline, taught in English. Undergraduate coursework typically covers classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and mathematical methods for physics, supported by laboratory courses that build experimental and measurement skills. Students also encounter introductory material in areas such as optics, solid-state physics, or astrophysics, depending on elective choices, and are trained to apply mathematical reasoning to physical problems. The program develops analytical thinking, quantitative problem-solving, and familiarity with scientific computing and laboratory instrumentation. Graduates with a bachelor's degree in physics pursue a range of paths, including further study at the graduate level in physics or related fields such as materials science, engineering, or data science. Others enter industries that value strong quantitative skills, such as semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, information technology, and engineering, or take positions in secondary education after further teacher training. The broad, rigorous training characteristic of physics degrees also prepares graduates for work in finance, scientific research support, and technical roles that require careful analysis and problem-solving. Located in Southern Taiwan, the program is situated in a region associated with electronics and technology manufacturing, offering context relevant to physics graduates seeking industry careers as well as those planning further academic study.
