The Master's Programme in Digital Social Science addresses the challenge of working with large and diverse data in ways that are both empirically rigorous and grounded in social theory. The programme takes the position that the key question in today's data-rich environment is not access to data but how to use it well — evaluating it critically, interpreting results credibly, and translating them into decisions and insights. The curriculum combines training in empirical methods with exposure to core social science theories. This pairing allows students to move between the patterns data can reveal and the theoretical explanations that make sense of those patterns. The programme is oriented toward students who want to apply a social science lens to data work, including critical evaluation across multiple theoretical perspectives. The two-year programme starts in September 2026 and is offered at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT in Lappeenranta, Finland.
