In the Faculty of Science and Health, PhD students join a new cluster focused on the global plastic crisis. Your work will contribute to updates on the impact of marine pollution from plastic packaging, working with industry partner Aquapak, and will involve designing, producing, and purifying multi-enzyme assemblies using bacteria or yeast. The Centre for Enzyme Innovation (CEI) combines facilities and expertise to translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world solutions, particularly in the area of PET depolymerisation. You will receive training in enzyme design and engineering, microbial fermentation, chromatography, solid-phase synthesis, biocalorimetry, polymer analysis, small-angle X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy, and polymer depolymerisation in bioreactors. Professor Andy Pickford, Director of the CEI, leads the supervisory team, with support from Senior Research Fellows Dr. Victoria Bemmer and Dr. Bruce Lichtenstein.
