The international Master's programme in English and American Studies at Osnabrück University offers a core curriculum covering literary and cultural studies and English linguistics, alongside courses in English language proficiency and free electives from other disciplines including history, philosophy, art history, and the social sciences. Students may specialise in English studies, American studies, or English linguistics, or follow a general studies path combining elements from all three areas. The programme runs over four semesters, with intakes in both the winter and summer semester. Literary studies address approaches and theories across specific periods — such as the Renaissance, Romanticism, and Postmodernism — and the evolving forms of literary texts. Cultural studies cover production in English-speaking countries across periods including Colonialism and Postcolonialism, the Gilded Age, and the Cold War, with specific areas including popular culture, film, new media, gender studies, and ethnic studies. In American studies, cultural legal studies and the history of narrative forms are particular focus areas. English linguistics modules address language structure, variation, acquisition, and areas such as cognitive linguistics and sociolinguistics. Designed language practice courses cover essay writing, rhetoric, debating, textual analysis, translation, and creative writing. A mandatory self-organised internship is part of the programme; options include editorial offices, publishing houses, museums, theatres, libraries, and the media. The programme is offered at Osnabrück University in Osnabrück, Germany.
