About the Program

The Master's programme in North American Studies at Leibniz University Hannover is a two-year consecutive degree taught exclusively in English, with no German language requirement. It is offered by the American Studies division within the English department and is designed for graduates with backgrounds in American Studies, English, or related fields of literary and cultural studies. The programme spans the literary and cultural history of North America from the colonial period to the present, examined within a transnational context. Categories of difference and diversity — including race, gender, sexuality, class, and religion — are addressed systematically across the curriculum. Students also have the opportunity to engage with media history and media theory, including television studies, popular culture, and digital cultures. Teaching takes place across 4 semesters and includes lectures, seminars, supervised student work groups, one mandatory internship, and a study abroad period of at least four weeks. The programme can start in either the winter or summer semester. The programme is based at Leibniz University Hannover, in Hannover, Germany.
