Determining whether a public health intervention actually works—and why—requires navigating the inherent complexity of real-world environments. This module tackles the intellectual challenge of evaluating interventions that rarely occur in controlled vacuums, but rather involve multiple interacting components, shifting contexts, and diverse mechanisms of change.

Designed for those aiming to bridge the gap between policy design and rigorous scientific assessment, the course equips practitioners with the tools to look inside the 'black box' of public health initiatives. Participants move beyond simple monitoring to master sophisticated approaches for documenting implementation, fidelity, and the pathways that lead to outcomes.

Core Evaluative Frameworks

• Theory of Change: Conceptualising and mapping the logic models that underpin complex interventions.
• Outcome Evaluation: Analysing causal effects through both randomised controlled trials and non-randomised designs, such as interrupted time-series and difference-in-difference.
• Process Evaluation: Assessing feasibility, acceptability, and accessibility to understand why interventions succeed or fail in specific settings.

By engaging with experienced field evaluators, students gain insight into the practical, ethical, and technical hurdles of conducting studies in both developed and developing country contexts, ultimately preparing to design evaluations that are both scientifically robust and contextually relevant.
