Bachelor in Featured Module American Crime Writing

Tuition is 16,000 GBP per year, while applications for the Sep 2027 intake are due by Aug 31, 2027.

From the locked room mystery to the gritty realism of the hard-boiled detective, the American crime fiction module invites students to dissect the evolution of a genre birthed from the ratiocination of Edgar Allan Poe. This course moves beyond mere plot analysis, asking students to perform their own surveillance on the cultural mechanisms that define the American crime narrative.

You will engage with a diverse array of literary voices, including Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, James Ellroy, and Patricia Highsmith. By tracing the trajectory from classic detective tropes to postmodern subversions, the module examines how writers establish—and subsequently shatter—the 'Rules of the Game.' It is an ideal fit for students interested in how crime writing mirrors societal anxieties and challenges traditional literary conventions.

Genre Evolution and Cultural Context

The module emphasizes the 'catalogue of minutiae' characteristic of the genre, encouraging a deep dive into cryptic ciphers, false clues, and the shifting role of the narrator. Through this study, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how crime fiction serves as a dynamic, evolving vehicle for social commentary in the twentieth century and beyond.
