How do language, culture, and power intersect to shape the modern world? This joint honours programme explores the dynamics of the French-speaking world—ranging from metropolitan France to global francophone cultures—alongside the complex mechanisms of political conflict, decision-making, and ideology.

By combining rigorous linguistic training with the study of political theory and international relations, students develop the analytical depth to examine how societies resolve disagreements and express their values. The curriculum is designed to foster a nuanced understanding of contemporary issues through diverse media, including literature, cinema, and visual culture, while simultaneously engaging with the structures of governance and international security.

A Global Perspective on Governance

A distinctive hallmark of this degree is the mandatory eight-month period of residence in a French-speaking country. This immersion goes beyond language acquisition; it is a transformative experience where students often engage in professional work placements, teaching, or academic study, gaining the intercultural awareness and adaptability essential for careers in diplomacy, the civil service, media, or the NGO sector. With teaching supported by the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice, students are uniquely positioned to connect their academic studies to real-world challenges in peace and conflict studies.
