General Medicine is the Bachelor's-level specialty through which NCJSC "Semey Medical University" admits foreign, fee-paying students in English medium. The specialty was opened in 2007 (the university's first cohort of 437 students, under a 2006 state license), and the School of Medicine -- successor to the General Medicine faculty deanery -- "ensures the implementation of educational programs General Medicine and Pediatrics". English-medium teaching for international students at the university dates back further still: SMU (then Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy) began teaching foreign students in English in 1998, the first medical university in Kazakhstan to do so, admitting students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sudan.
