Freie Universität Berlin

Master in Global East Asia (MAGEA)

Berlin, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Global East Asia (MAGEA) is a four-semester master's programme at Freie Universität Berlin that develops both discipline-specific and multidisciplinary skills for the study of East Asia in its historical and contemporary dimensions. Students choose one focus country — China, Japan, or Korea — and examine that country alongside the broader East Asian region and its global entanglements. The curriculum draws on historical, political, economic, social, cultural, and linguistic source material, building intercultural competencies alongside independent research skills. The programme is structured around three main areas: a compulsory integrative module on Global East Asia; an area of specialisation requiring modules from at least two of the three regional tracks (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean Studies); and a complementary area encouraging students to deepen language skills in one of those languages or to draw on related programmes in political science, sociology, or global history at Freie Universität Berlin. The programme concludes with a master's thesis. Graduates are qualified to enter doctoral studies or pursue careers related to East Asia in a range of fields. The programme is offered at Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin, Germany.
