Stepping into the Leeds School of Arts, you immediately encounter a space where static imagery and fluid motion collide. The BA (Hons) Illustration & Animation programme is built on the belief that visual storytelling is a powerful tool for navigating the complexities of the modern world. It is a home for those who want to move beyond simple mark-making to become agile, expressive creatives ready to tackle professional briefs and personal projects alike.

This course thrives on a culture of experimentation. You won't just learn industry-standard software; you will explore the intersections of narrative, sequence, and visual language, learning how to use image and motion to respond to urgent human and environmental needs. Whether you are interested in the fine details of character design, the conceptual weight of editorial illustration, or the immersive nature of moving images, you are encouraged to develop a distinctive creative voice that is uniquely your own.

Community and Industry Integration

The programme is deeply embedded in a vibrant, collaborative network. Through the INSIDE/OUT lecture series, students gain direct access to industry leaders—from award-winning animators and costume designers to influential graphic artists—who share the realities of building a career in the arts. By engaging with live projects and external organisations, you gain the "social capital" necessary to thrive, learning how to pitch your ideas, manage client expectations, and position your portfolio within the competitive global creative landscape.
