About the Program

Want to gain a broad understanding of important filamentous fungi in agriculture, food production, indoor environments, pharma and biotech, both as contaminants and as production organisms ? This course provides a broad understanding of important filamentous fungi in agriculture, food production, indoor environments, pharma and biotech, both as contaminants and as production organisms. The course instructors will deliver a comprehensive insight in mycological methods for isolation, identification, screening and characterization of fungi and knowledge on how fungi grow and interact within a given system. Participants will get hands-on experience in the identification of the most common fungal species and knowledge of their production of enzymes, small acids and mycotoxins. Through group work and case studies, participants will become familiar with the retrieval and interpretation of experimental data from mycological experiments and the literature. For more details on scope, form and exam please see course base . Content The course program: Day 1. Fungal Biodiversity & Ecology Day 2. Fungal genomics – taxonomy – specialization Day 3. Sampling fungi and their identification Day 4. Fungal metabolites and fungi as spoilers and producers of foods Day 5. Fungal engineering & screening Learning outcomes At the end of this course, participants will be able to: Identify and characterize industrially important molds to species level by multidisciplinary methods Predict the possibilities for fungal growth Screen for production of enzymes, lead compounds and food ingredients Understand the challenges in fungal fermentations Retrieve and interpret data from on-line databases on fungal bioinformatics Evaluate the possibilities for production of mycotoxins Annotate genomes for fungal secondary metaolite gene clusters Assess a mycological subject within industry and present the subject to people with mycological experience at an advanced level Who should attend? This course is ideal for professionals in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, agriculture, and food production sectors who are involved with or interested in the industrial applications of fungi. It is particularly beneficial for: Environmental Scientists: Those exploring the use of fungi for bioremediation and sustainable production practices. Bioprocess Engineers and Technicians: Those responsible for optimizing fungal processes in industrial settings. R&D Scientists and Biotechnologists: Professionals focused on developing fungal applications for new or existing products. Quality Control and Safety Specialists: Individuals involved in monitoring and controlling fungal contaminants in various environments. Admission requirements Participants do not need to have specific knowledge in the field of biotechnology other than a basic high-school level understanding of natural sciences.
