Nagoya University offers a master's program in International Development and Cooperation Study, a two-year course taught in English that begins each April. Nagoya University is a comprehensive research university located in the Tokai region of Japan, an area known for its manufacturing and industry, and its self-described "free and vigorous" academic culture has produced research results and trained people who go on to contribute to society. International development and cooperation study examines how countries and international organizations design and implement policies to address poverty, economic growth, governance, education, health, and other development challenges, often with particular attention to cooperation between developed and developing regions. Master's coursework in this field typically combines classes in economics, political science, sociology, and area studies with training in research methods, leading to a thesis project that examines a specific development or cooperation issue. Graduates of master's programs in international development pursue careers with international organizations, government development agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and private consultancies working on program design, implementation, or evaluation, or continue into doctoral study. Two years of coursework combined with a research thesis give students both the conceptual grounding and applied research skills needed for entry-level and mid-career roles in international development work. Nagoya University's location within a research-oriented university with strengths across the social sciences provides institutional support for graduate study in this interdisciplinary field.
