About Graduate School of International Management

The Japan-Global Development Program at the International University of Japan is a two-year master's program taught entirely in English, based in Niigata with enrollment beginning in September. IUJ describes itself as a place where the world gathers: a graduate school offering all its courses in English to 380 students from 60 countries, supported by on-campus dormitories, staff, and faculty geared toward an international student body. The program centers on development studies, examining how countries and communities pursue economic growth, institutional reform, and social progress, often with attention to Japan's own development experience as a reference point for other nations. Coursework in a program of this kind typically covers development economics, public policy, project planning and evaluation, governance, and regional case studies, preparing students to analyze development challenges in agriculture, infrastructure, education, health, and institutional capacity building. Students often complete a research project or thesis component applying these frameworks to a specific country or policy issue. Graduates of development-focused master's programs commonly go on to work in government ministries, international development agencies, multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, and research institutes, as well as in policy and program roles within the private sector. A two-year format allows time for foundational coursework in economics and policy analysis before moving into more specialized electives and applied research. Studying in Niigata places students within a smaller Japanese city outside the largest metropolitan centers, alongside a graduate community drawn from dozens of countries, which the university presents as part of the learning environment for its development and policy programs.
