Bachelor in International Liberal Studies (English-based Degree Program)

Tokyo, Japan Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

International Liberal Studies is a four-year, English-taught bachelor's degree at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, with intakes available in April and September. Waseda University is internationally recognized as one of the top private universities in Japan, based in central Tokyo. It is organized into 13 undergraduate schools and 20 graduate schools, enrolls over 47,000 students, and is the second-largest university in the country. The university has produced 8 prime ministers, and its alumni are active across many fields in Japan and internationally. Guided by its founder's ethos of harmonizing Eastern and Western cultures, Waseda has welcomed international students since its founding and describes itself as the most global-friendly university in Japan, enrolling around 8,000 students from more than 120 countries and regions in the 2019 academic year. This program follows a liberal arts model, allowing students to study broadly across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences before focusing on an area of interest, rather than committing to a single specialized major from the start. Coursework in programs of this kind typically includes writing and critical thinking seminars, quantitative reasoning, and elective courses across departments, supported by small-group discussion and interdisciplinary projects. The English track admission process treats the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) as an optional rather than mandatory component, with mathematics assessed through one of two available course options. Based in central Tokyo, students have access to Waseda's full range of academic resources and to the cultural and professional opportunities of the capital. Graduates of liberal arts programs commonly pursue further study or careers across business, media, government, education, and international organizations, drawing on the breadth of their undergraduate training.
