Language Support for Newcomers for Childcare Level 1

This program helps newcomers to Canada improve their English skills while gaining the basic knowledge needed to work in early childhood education. It is designed for those with CLB Level 6 or higher English proficiency who are new to the workforce or working fewer than 20 hours per week. Participants learn language skills specific to childcare settings and gain familiarity with Alberta's early childhood education standards and workplace culture.

The program runs for 24 weeks and includes classroom training, employment support, and a 4-week practicum. Classroom sessions are held on Fridays for three hours at Keyano College's Clearwater Campus. Employment support is delivered in person with local childcare employers. The practicum takes place in licensed childcare facilities across Fort McMurray and requires 20 hours of work per week.

To qualify, applicants must be permanent residents, naturalized citizens, or convention refugees. They must not be eligible for Employment Insurance and must have completed or be enrolled in CLB Level 4 LINC classes. A clear criminal record check is required. The program is free and funded by the Government of Alberta.
