Bachelor in Licence - Musicologie

The tuition fee is 178 EUR per year.

The Licence - Musicologie at Université Jean Monnet - Saint Etienne (42) in Saint-Étienne, France, is a bachelor's degree that examines music as both an art form and a subject of scholarly inquiry, combining analytical, historical, and theoretical approaches to the study of musical culture in its many forms. Students typically work across music history — from ancient and medieval music through Western classical traditions to contemporary and popular forms — alongside music analysis, aesthetics, acoustics, and the social and cultural roles of music. Practical ear-training, harmony, and counterpoint courses complement theoretical study, ensuring students develop both listening skills and an understanding of compositional principles. The programme may also address ethnomusicology, the music industry, event and institution management, and the role of music in society, broadening the range of professional directions open to graduates. Career paths include music education, arts administration, cultural journalism, sound archiving, library and heritage work, and radio or media production. Graduate students often continue to master's programmes in musicology, composition, sound design, or arts and cultural management, or prepare for teaching roles in secondary and higher education. The three-year programme is taught in French and begins in September in Saint-Étienne, a city in the Loire region of France. Annual tuition is 178 EUR.
