About the Program

Life Science Informatics at the University of Bonn is a four-semester Master's programme distinguished by its combination of natural science and IT competence and by the depth of its integration between research and teaching. The programme is structured around four main content blocks: computer science and mathematics for natural scientists; basic principles of life science informatics; biology of the cell and systems biology; and biomedical data science and artificial intelligence. Major topics covered include biomedical database systems, information retrieval, data mining, machine learning, statistical genetics, drug design, medical imaging and visualisation, computational neuroscience, regulatory and metabolic network modelling, systems biology, microarray analysis, and biomedical AI. Lab courses are embedded in both basic and applied research at the Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Information Technology (FIT) and for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI), with links to regional industry. The first three semesters consist of lectures and lab work; the fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, which may be completed in cooperation with industry partners. The programme also includes training on the ethical implications of emerging biotechnologies and an International Lecture Series each summer semester that brings prominent international researchers to engage students.
