Master in Linguistics: Empirical and Theoretical Foundations

Potsdam, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's programme in Linguistics: Empirical and Theoretical Foundations at the University of Potsdam is an interdisciplinary, English-language programme running over four semesters. It builds on linguistic knowledge from the Bachelor's level by combining formal grammar modelling with experimental methods and field research across the core areas of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The curriculum is divided into an introductory phase covering phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, statistics, and programming; a specialisation phase in which students choose three of five modules (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics); an empirical methods phase with a choice between neurolinguistics/psycholinguistics and fieldwork; and an advanced phase of two extension modules. The Master's thesis is written in the fourth semester. Students are trained to identify and analyse current research trends, reflect on them critically, and develop their own research questions and methods. The programme is offered at the University of Potsdam in Potsdam.
