The Locksmith Apprenticeship program at Red Deer Polytechnic lasts three years. It mixes classroom learning with hands-on training. Students study mechanical and electronic locking systems, master keying, safe servicing, and secure entry methods. Graduates work in homes, vehicles, businesses, and institutions.

Each year has eight weeks of classroom sessions. Each year also requires at least 1,560 hours of on-the-job training. Campus visits are only for lab weeks. Most time is spent working under supervision in real environments. The curriculum includes codes, regulations, blueprint reading, and security hardware basics.

To finish the programme, students must pass both theory and practical parts. A weighted average of 65% is required. No single section can score below 50%. Each period also needs a minimum of 70% on the AIT Provincial Exams. Upon completion, graduates get a Journeyperson Certificate and a Diploma. These qualify them to work legally in the trade.
