About Master of Physics

The Master of Science in Physics at Leibniz University Hannover is a research-oriented programme that introduces students to the frontiers of physics research and trains them to work independently in both academic and industrial settings. Students build in-depth knowledge across three core research areas: solid state physics, quantum optics, and gravitational physics. Work in quantum optics spans topics including atom optics and quantum sensors, ultra-cold quantum gases, optomechanics, quantum dynamics, ultrafast laser optics, quantum computing, quantum metrology, trapped-ion quantum engineering, and optical clocks. Solid-state physics research covers low-dimensional solids, nanostructures, solar energy, strongly correlated electrons, and quantum transport. Gravitational physics research addresses laser interferometry, gravitational wave astronomy, quantum control, string theory, general relativity, and cosmology. Additional thesis topics include radioecology and quantum information theory, and research projects can also be carried out at collaborating centres such as the Laser Zentrum Hannover. The programme spans 4 semesters, with a first year devoted to specialisation and coursework and a second year centred on an independent research project and Master's thesis.
