About Master of Science in Data Science

Applications are due 31 May.

The Master of Science in Data Science at Freie Universität Berlin develops skills for handling the digitisation of the physical and life sciences, covering the collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation of large digital data sets. The programme draws on mathematics, statistics, computer science, and machine learning, with application-oriented content from the quantitative physical and life sciences. The four-semester programme is structured into a fundamentals area in the first semester and a profile area in the second and third semesters. Mandatory fundamentals modules cover Introduction to Profile Areas, Statistics for Data Science, Machine Learning for Data Science, and Programming for Data Science. Students then specialise in one of two profiles: Data Science in the Life Sciences, which applies data science methodologies to biological, biomedical, and health-related fields; or Data Science Technologies, which develops computational and algorithmic expertise for roles in software engineering, artificial intelligence, and big data infrastructure. Both profiles include a mandatory module in Ethical Foundations of Data Science and a 15-credit elective area. The Master's thesis, which runs for 23 weeks, is completed in the fourth semester after at least 60 credits have been earned. The programme starts in the winter semester and is offered at Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin, Germany.
