Biomaterials, formally the M.Sc. Biomaterials program in the Faculty of Materials Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology, is taught in English in Warszawa, Poland, over three semesters (one and a half years), with the next intake starting February 23, 2026, and annual tuition of 8,560 EUR. This interdisciplinary course builds knowledge and skills in advanced material science with a particular focus on materials for medical applications. The central aim is to develop expertise in biomaterials, covering design, characterisation, fabrication, and application across different fields of medicine. Students study metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites used in medicine, along with the role materials science plays in designing and optimizing them. The course also covers modern methods of shaping material properties, design, and manufacturing, viewed through the lens of how materials interact with living cells and support the replacement or regeneration of tissues and organs. Further topics include how a living organism affects biomaterial and implant behaviour, the degradation of various biomaterials, the basics of cell and tissue biology, and the biocompatibility, biophysical, biochemical, and biomechanical requirements that biomaterials and medical devices must meet. Example modules include Materials Design, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, Phase Transformations, Thermodynamics of Alloys, Biomaterials, Bioengineering, Methods of Biomaterials Characterization, Tissue Engineering, Defects of Crystalline Structure, and Microbiological Corrosion. Graduates typically move into roles at biomedical companies, or within state and private hospitals and diagnostic clinics, applying their combined materials-science and medical-application training to healthcare technology and device development.
