About Master in Materials Engineering (MASc)

The MASc is normally completed over two years of full-time study, with the possibility of extending beyond this period if the research project requires additional time. In the first year students undertake coursework and develop a research proposal; the second year is dedicated to conducting original research and writing the thesis.

The programme is intended for graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, materials science or a closely related discipline and wish to deepen their knowledge of material design, advanced manufacturing, coating technologies and characterisation techniques. Applicants should have a solid grounding in engineering principles and an interest in research applicable to sectors such as energy, automotive or aerospace.

Delivered in-person, the MASc offers a thesis option and an optional co-op component that allows students to gain professional experience while completing their research. Students work within Dalhousie’s research-intensive environment and have access to modern laboratories supporting materials investigations.
