The institution began as Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn in 1863 and was chartered as Adelphi College in 1896. Today, Adelphi is organized into eight schools and colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Willumstad School of Business, the College of Nursing and Public Health, the Derner School of Psychology and the School of Social Work.

Academic study combines small classes, faculty mentoring, internships, research and hands-on learning. Students can choose from undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, including accelerated 4+1 pathways and online options. Adelphi offers study-abroad programs ranging from faculty-led and alternate-break experiences to full-semester placements.
