Mechanical Engineering focuses on the design, analysis, and manufacture of mechanical systems, covering subjects such as statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, and machine design. Students take a sequence of mathematics and physics courses before moving into specialized engineering coursework, often supported by computer-aided design and laboratory work on manufacturing processes and mechanical testing. As the program progresses, students typically study topics such as heat transfer, mechanical vibrations, control systems, and manufacturing engineering, building a broad technical base that spans design, analysis, and production. Laboratory sessions give students hands-on experience with measurement instruments, material testing equipment, and manufacturing tools, connecting classroom theory to physical practice. Many programs include coursework in computer-aided design and simulation software used throughout the mechanical engineering profession to model and test designs before they are built. A final-year design project is a common capstone experience, requiring students to apply the full range of skills developed during the program to a substantial engineering problem, often in collaboration with industry. Graduates of mechanical engineering programs work across sectors including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, and construction, and the degree also provides a foundation for further study at the graduate level.
