Students also study the design of fine mechanisms using CAD and optomechatronics, the basics of photonics, instrumental optics, optoelectronics technology and image processing, laser techniques, machine vision, fiber optics technology for telecommunications and sensors, photonics devices and systems, and lighting technology. Graduates are prepared for work in industry and small and medium-sized enterprises, ready to tackle engineering problems, and can support services built around optomechatronics equipment used in fields including multimedia, medicine, lighting and metrology. Mechatronics as a wider discipline merges mechanical, electrical, optical and computer engineering to build integrated systems, and graduates from programs in this area typically move into roles in instrumentation design, sensor development, and technical support across manufacturing, healthcare technology and consumer electronics sectors.
