The institution began as Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn in 1863 and was chartered as Adelphi College in 1896. It moved to Garden City in 1929 and became the first private coeducational institution of higher education on Long Island. Today, Adelphi is organized into eight schools and colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Willumstad School of Business, the College of Nursing and Public Health, the Derner School of Psychology and the School of Social Work.
