Medicine is the study and practice of diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness, combining foundational sciences with clinical training over an extended course of study. The curriculum typically begins with basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, then progresses into pathology, clinical medicine, and supervised clinical rotations across specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics. Students learn to take patient histories, perform physical examinations, interpret diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans under the supervision of practicing physicians and faculty. Graduates typically go on to postgraduate training or residency programs in a medical specialty before practicing as physicians, and some pursue careers in medical research or public health. This bachelor-level medical program is taught in English over 6 years at Bahçeşehir University in İstanbul, Turkey, reflecting the extended length typical of medical education that combines preclinical and clinical years. The program generally moves from classroom and laboratory-based science instruction in the early years toward hospital-based clinical training in later years, giving students progressively more direct patient contact under supervision. İstanbul, as a large city with numerous hospitals and medical centers, offers extensive clinical training environments for students in later stages of the program. Small-group learning, laboratory work, and bedside teaching are common instructional methods used throughout medical education of this kind.
