About the Program

The programme integrates Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training and has been co-developed with regional local authorities, ensuring relevance to statutory practice and current service needs.

Running over a single year of full-time, in-person study, it is intended for qualified mental health practitioners – social workers, mental health and learning-disability nurses, occupational therapists and clinical psychologists. Core compulsory modules include Theory and Practice of Mental Health Law (SW4117), Critical Reflections on Models of Mental Disorder (SW4122) and Diverse Professional Roles and Service User Experiences (SW4123). The course blends lectures, seminars, values-based and evidence-based learning with a supervised practice placement and a reflective portfolio.

Graduates can be approved by a Local Authority to practice as an AMHP.
