Master in MSc Physics

The MSc Physics at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg builds on a three-year Bachelor's in physics or equivalent and is structured over four semesters, concluding with a one-year research phase. The programme covers selected advanced areas of physics, with focal points in astrophysics and astroparticle physics, condensed matter physics, optical sciences, physics in life sciences, quantum technologies, and theoretical physics. Students must complete a minimum of courses in both theoretical and experimental physics but otherwise have considerable flexibility in shaping their individual study plan. The first year combines advanced courses, lab courses and projects, and a compulsory seminar. Elective coursework may include related courses in chemistry, engineering, or mathematics. The second year is dedicated to a research project: the first half is spent acquiring specialised knowledge and planning the work, and the second half is spent carrying out and documenting the research in the Master's thesis, which is then presented and defended in a public colloquium. Specialisation certifications are available in fields including astrophysics and astroparticle physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum technologies, requiring at least 30 ECTS of coursework in the relevant area in addition to the research phase. The research phase is conducted within internationally recognised groups. The programme is open for entry in both the winter and summer semesters.
