About PhD in Music Performance Practice PhD / MA by Research

    At University of Birmingham, England, tuition is £23,390 (full-time) / £11,695 (part-time).

A live ‘Minor Performance’ of 30 minutes, accompanied by a written programme note and critical commentary, forms a key milestone in the second year of the PhD. This performance is examined by internal examiners and followed by a short viva, giving candidates early feedback on their practice-based research.

The programme is aimed at accomplished performers who wish to develop a practice-based research project, whether in contemporary, experimental or historically-informed music. Applicants need a Merit-level Master’s (for PhD) or a 2:1 Honours degree (for MA by Research) and must submit a research proposal, an academic writing sample and a recital video of about 30 minutes (or 20 minutes for the MA).
