The Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT) at Aston University is a world-leading hub for pioneering research in fibre optic sensing and light-based technologies. This PhD opportunity invites a motivated researcher to join an established experimental group dedicated to the next generation of sensing solutions. The project is situated at the intersection of advanced photonics, machine learning, and structural engineering, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to critical industrial challenges.

Advancing Structural Health Monitoring

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is essential for the safety of modern engineering, from aerospace components and civil infrastructure to wind turbines. While Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are currently the industry standard due to their robustness, they face limitations in high-resolution defect localisation and cost-effective predictive modelling. This project aims to overcome these barriers by developing and validating an AI-driven polarimetric dual optical frequency comb (DOFC) technique. By integrating sophisticated photonic sensing with machine learning, the research seeks to:

  • Improve the precision of defect classification and localisation within composite laminates.
  • Enable predictive modelling of defect evolution to enhance safety in operational environments.
  • Create scalable, cost-effective sensing architectures suitable for industrial deployment in collaboration with partners such as Airbus, Insensys, and Target3D.

This fully-funded studentship provides an environment where multidisciplinary collaboration is championed. Candidates will work alongside leading experts to make an original contribution to knowledge, gaining advanced technical skills in experimental optics and data analysis that are highly sought after in both academic and industrial sectors.
