PhD in Dynamic Performance and AI Driven Optimisation Hybrid Energy Systems Net Zero PhD

The application deadline for PhD Dynamic Performance and AI Driven Optimisation Hybrid Energy Systems Net Zero is Jul 15, 2027, while tuition fees are 16,590 GBP per year.

The Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) represents a flagship interdisciplinary partnership between Aston University, the University of Nottingham, Queen’s University Belfast, and the University of Warwick, dedicated to engineering the next generation of solutions for climate neutrality. This programme is specifically tailored for researchers who are passionate about developing negative emission technologies and transforming global energy infrastructure.

Research Focus: Dynamic Performance and AI-Driven Optimisation

This specific doctoral project addresses the critical challenge of decarbonising gas turbine-based power generation while managing grid instability. By bridging the gap between steady-state modelling and real-world dynamic performance, you will investigate the integration of low-temperature carbon capture, biomass gasification, and advanced solar thermal applications. The research emphasizes:

• The creation of intelligent control strategies for hybrid energy systems.
• Techno-economic assessment and life cycle analysis of closed-loop carbon platforms.
• AI-driven multi-objective optimisation to enhance system resilience under variable climate and grid conditions.

Beyond the technical research, the CDT provides a comprehensive training environment including professional development in entrepreneurship, communication, and policy engagement, supported by a three-month placement with industry or policy partners.

Aston University in Birmingham is a career-focused public research university with a central campus and a long tradition of linking education to industry. Founded from technical roots in 1895, Aston combines academic study with practical experience and is known for strong employability outcomes. The urban campus places students close to business, cultural and transport hubs, and a multicultural student community contributes to a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

Aston emphasises applied learning, professional placements and partnerships with employers, so many programmes integrate a placement year or live industry projects. Facilities include modern lecture spaces, specialised labs and student services that support academic success and wellbeing. Small-group teaching and strong student support ensure international students have access to language help, academic workshops and career guidance tailored to the UK labour market.

Student life blends campus convenience with Birmingham’s vibrant cultural scene, offering clubs, societies and volunteer opportunities to build networks and practical skills. The university’s careers team helps with CVs, internships and graduate recruitment, while accommodation and welfare services ease the transition to study in the UK. Applicants should explore course accreditation, placement options and scholarship possibilities early, and connect with Aston’s international advisers to plan applications and arrival logistics.
