About the Program

The Master's programme in One Health at Justus Liebig University Giessen takes an interdisciplinary approach to the connections between human, animal, and environmental health. Students are introduced to core concepts of One Health and Planetary Health and develop analytical skills for addressing global health challenges. Central subject areas include Public Health, Public Health Nutrition, and Infectious Diseases, with coverage of health systems, non-communicable diseases, zoonoses, prevention strategies, and the social and environmental determinants of health. The programme also covers environmental risk assessment, sustainability, land use, animal husbandry, and their effects on ecosystems, animal health, and food systems. Training in research methods, statistics, epidemiology, and data analysis runs throughout the curriculum. The course is built around 10 mandatory core modules and 6 optional profile modules; two profile modules can be replaced by a work placement. The programme spans 4 semesters, starting in the winter semester. Graduates are prepared for roles in international organisations, public health, research institutions, NGOs, and private-sector health or environmental management, and the scientific focus also qualifies them for doctoral study.
