Leibniz University Hannover

Master in Optical Technologies – Photonics and Laser Technology

Hannover, Germany Taught in German Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's in Optical Technologies — Photonics and Laser Technology at Leibniz University Hannover provides advanced training in an interdisciplinary field spanning physics, mechanical engineering, and optoelectronics. The programme covers the scientific and technical applications of light across a range of modern industries, from automotive and mechanical engineering to micro- and optoelectronics, pharmaceutical, and medical device engineering. The curriculum is structured across 4 semesters, with intakes in both the winter and summer semester. Foundational compulsory courses such as Optical Measurement Technology and Design and Simulation of Optomechatronic Systems establish a shared baseline for students from different disciplinary backgrounds. Students then select from a range of optional and compulsory optional modules to pursue one of five course foci: Optical Metrology, Laser Technology, Biophotonics, Technical Optics and Automotive Lighting, or Optics in Production and Power Engineering. Practical training is substantial, including laboratory courses at the university's institutes, an eight-week basic internship, a twelve-week industrial training, and a scientific student project. The programme is conducted in German, and benefits from the involvement of the Hannover Centre for Optical Technologies (HOT) and the Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH), which connect students to industry research at an early stage. The programme is based at Leibniz University Hannover in Hannover, Germany.
