The Outdoor Classroom and Firepit project serves as a practical manifestation of these architectural inquiries, representing a collaborative 'live project' undertaken by Year 1 BA (Hons) Architecture students. Shortlisted for the 2020 RIBA MacEwan Award, this initiative demonstrates the capacity for academic design to transcend the studio, resulting in an ecologically conscious and socioeconomically robust structure.

Integrated Collaborative Design

This project emerged from a multidisciplinary partnership between architecture students and those from the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies and Education programmes. By navigating the full lifecycle of a commission—from initial client briefing and conceptual design to construction and post-completion evaluation—students gain direct experience in the realities of professional practice. The finished classroom, constructed from 130 recycled timber pallets, provides a tangible example of how sustainable material selection can serve educational purposes while anchoring the social life of a primary school site through its central firepit.
