The PhD Programme in Agricultural Science (PAG) at the University of Göttingen provides specialised doctoral training across eight majors: Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, Agronomy, Animal Production, Management of Natural Resources, Agribusiness, Tropical and International Agriculture, Global Agri-Food Systems, and Animal Welfare. The programme emphasises independent research and combines this with structured coursework. The graduate curriculum includes lectures, tutorials, seminars, and methods courses. Students also receive training in oral and written communication, scientific writing and publishing, and are expected to participate in international conferences or workshops. Soft skills including teamwork, problem-solving, and moderation techniques are also addressed. The programme runs across 6 semesters. At the end of the programme, doctoral candidates submit a dissertation in either a traditional monograph format or as a collection of publications from internationally recognised journals, supplemented by a general introduction and discussion. The degree awarded is PhD or, alternatively, Dr sc agr, Dr rer nat, or Dr rer pol, following a successful defence and publication.
