Graduates of this programme become fully qualified teachers of art and design for secondary schools, able to work in academies, state-maintained, independent and special schools across England and Wales, and also teach post-16 students. Many go on to senior teaching roles, curriculum leadership or further study in education.

The course’s most distinctive feature is its extensive school-based training – at least 120 days in two placement schools – complemented by intensive subject-specific sessions at the University and at Winchester School of Art, giving trainees real-world classroom experience supported by experienced mentors.

Art and design education explores how to help young people develop creative ideas, master techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture and digital media, and understand the cultural and historical contexts of artistic practice. The PGCE provides the knowledge and skills needed to teach these concepts within the UK National Curriculum for Key Stages 3 and 4.
