The Master's degree in Physics at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg is structured over four semesters and divided into two distinct phases. The first two semesters form an advanced studies phase covering applied, experimental, and theoretical subject areas, with content grounded in the research priorities of the Institute of Physics and its partner institutions. The central research focus is on materials research related to semiconductor devices and functional materials, including characterisation of new materials for silicon-based nanotechnologies, the development of innovative semiconductor devices such as integrated sensors, spectroscopic analysis of interfaces and nanostructures, and the development of integrated THz radiation sources. Theoretical work in condensed matter theory and non-linear physics complements these experimental topics. The second two semesters form the research phase, the main component of which is the preparation of the Master's thesis. Students engage with the current state of research in a branch of physics and demonstrate independent research capacity. The programme maintains close ties with non-university research institutes including the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems, DESY Zeuthen, the Institute for Crystal Growth Berlin, and the IHP Frankfurt/Oder, allowing students direct contact with external research groups during the advanced studies phase. Students earn 30 credit points per semester for a total of 120. The programme is intended to prepare graduates for a subsequent doctorate. No knowledge of German is required for admission. The programme is offered at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, located in Cottbus, Germany.
