Master in Physics

The Master's programme in Physics at Osnabrück University aims to build a solid foundation in general physics while giving students substantial hands-on research experience, whether in laboratory settings or in theoretical work. Research at the department spans condensed matter physics, including quantum phenomena in reduced dimensions, nano-science, and novel materials. Theoretical groups lead a national research unit focused on the emergence of thermodynamics in non-equilibrium systems using statistical physics of complex classical and quantum systems. Experimental methods include ultrafast optics, x-ray and photo-electron spectroscopies, magnetometry, spin resonance, scanning probe microscopy, and electronic transport. The programme is fully modular and runs over four semesters. Students accumulate 120 credit points in total, roughly 30 per semester. The first two semesters cover a physics major with advanced lab courses and a choice from around 40 modules, alongside a minor in an area such as mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science, or economics. The final two semesters include professional specialisation, a research project, and the Master's thesis with colloquium. Admission is open for both winter and summer semesters. Students interact closely with faculty and can integrate external lab coursework at non-university institutions into their programme.
