The Picky Eating In Adults PhD will examine the prevalence of Picky Eating and its link to food neophobia and other eating-related conditions in the UK. The Faculty of Science and Health within the School of Psychology, Sport and Health Science supervises the project, which involves understanding the experiences of individuals who identify as Picky Eaters, as well as strategies to enhance their eating experiences. The term 'Picky Eaters' (PEs) often describes a range of eating practices, including those who are fussy eaters and less willing to try new foods (Neophobia), but it is also a central aspect of the DSM classification for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) (DSM-5, APA).

Work on the prevalence of ARFID in the UK is rare but one recent report estimated this to be between 4 and 11% (Nicholls-Clow et al., 2024), affecting a substantial number of individuals. Restricting eating can lead to deficiencies in nutrients, possibly increasing health risks, and impacting social aspects of eating. The PhD aims to explore behavioural traits such as Neophobia and Orthorexia, and to develop strategies to broaden the range of foods that PEs consume, linking to recent work (Annette & Stafford, 2023).
