The MSc in Politics and Democracy at Leuphana University Lüneburg examines the state and future of democratic governance in the context of contemporary challenges, including the rise of populist movements, the spread of misinformation through social media, declining trust in democratic institutions, and competition from authoritarian governance models. The programme is designed to equip students with tools to analyse, critique, and work toward improvements in democracy across different global contexts. A distinctive feature is the collaboration with scholars from the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg, which supports a focus on democracy in both the Global North and the Global South, including questions about the desirability and legitimacy of democratic governance in various regions. The programme runs over four semesters and starts in the winter semester. The programme is offered at Leuphana University Lüneburg, located in Lüneburg, Germany.
