The Pre-Welder certificate program at Lethbridge Polytechnic prepares individuals for a career in welding over 15 weeks. The program covers safety practices, reading plans and drawings, essential math skills, and four types of welding. It includes the first year of Alberta's apprenticeship curriculum. It is designed for people with no prior experience in the trades.

Training takes place in a well-equipped welding shop with hands-on instruction. The program includes a two-week work-integrated learning placement to build real-world experience. This helps individuals stand out when applying for welder apprentice positions. Classes are delivered on campus in a face-to-face format with some blended and hyflex components.

Upon completion, individuals are ready to write the First Period Alberta Apprenticeship exam. They also develop key job-seeking skills like writing resumes and preparing for interviews. Graduates can pursue careers in commercial construction, heavy equipment repair, industrial construction, pipeline work, steel fabrication, and structural steel assembly.
